Welcome back! If you missed Part One of the Storylines experience in Belize, you can read about it here. Recently, some of Storylines’ brand ambassadors embarked on our latest curated experience trip, this time to Belize. This was our third trip after the incredible experience in the Philippines followed by an amazing journey to Andalusia, Spain. It’s safe to say that Belize was just as fun and fulfilling as those before it!
In Part 2 of the very special itinerary, the group engaged in activities such as navigating the jungle, giving back to local communities, and exploring the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef, to name a few.
Let’s jump straight into Day Five!
Day 5: Community Outreach at Santa Cruz Village School
Santa Cruz Village School
At the heart of the Storylines ethos, we prioritize philanthropy and sustainability. Giving back to the places we visit is key to our mission and one of our eight core principles. In this community, we donated a large water tank and supplies to rebuild the dilapidated greenhouse, enabling students to grow crops and learn about sustainable agriculture. When our ambassadors arrived, the water tank was being filled, and the students were very happy about that, though they were more interested in chatting with Christopher and Alicia, who have two young children at home.
It was a special privilege to be invited into the village, and Storylines’ brand ambassadors felt honored to have this unique experience of talking with the children and learning more about their culture and way of life.
The group then departed the incredible Copal Tree Lodge, said goodbye to their guide, the amazing Bruno Kuppinger of Toledo Cave and Adventure Tours and made their way to the coast with Ian, our new guide from Barefoot Services Belize.
Next stop - Placencia!
Day 6: Zipline, Beach and Bongos
The day started with a glorious oceanfront breakfast at Umaya Hotel, a tranquil hotel on Maya Beach with gorgeous views of the golden sands and sunset over a blue lagoon, where the group will venture out to, but not before ziplining through the jungle.
Umaya Beach Resort and Zipline at Bocawina National Park
They set out for the day’s adventure: ziplining through the canopy in Bocawina National Park, famous for the Mayflower Archaeological site. It was an exhilarating experience, and Austin seemed uncannily at home on the zipline, continuously nailing the perfect landing.
Lunch followed at the amazing Singanga restaurant at Hamanasi Resort where they enjoyed incredible 360-degree views from the rooftop. If you are a fan of Mexican cuisine, then you need to try the pork tacos here, claimed by future resident Alina (a taco connoisseur from SoCal) as the best she’s ever had!
Lebeha Drumming Center
The afternoon was focused on traditional Garifuna drumming at Lebeha Drumming Center at the beach in Hopkins. It was a beautiful cultural learning experience and the Storylines troupe really got into the groove with everyone learning some new beats and dance moves.
Day 7: Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
A trip to Belize wouldn’t be complete without a day at the Belize Barrier Reef. Spanning 190 miles, it is the world's second-largest reef system and hosts hundreds of coral species. It plays a vital role in the Belizean economy. At Laughing Bird Caye National Park and the palm-fringed island of Moho Caye, the ambassadors enjoyed seeing many varieties of fish species, reef sharks, rays and reef squid. Guided by Splash Dive Center, some of the group snorkeled while others went scuba diving.
The group was educated about a very important reef restoration project. In 2001, Hurricane Iris devastated large portions of the Belize Barrier Reef, including the Laughing Bird Caye National Park. Yet, thanks to the efforts of the local community, over 85,000 coral fragments have been planted in this National Park. Impressively, the site now boasts 60% coral coverage, surpassing pre-Hurricane Iris levels, and making it one of the world's most successful restoration projects.
Day 8: Check-Out and Departure
Sadly, the sun must set on Belize. After another delicious meal at Umaya’s Restaurante Laguna, the group said their final goodbyes before departing for the international airport. Our ambassadors forged new friendships and made incredible memories on a trip that gave a tantalizing taste of what lies ahead in the most exciting chapter of their lives. It was perhaps best summed up by Storylines' future resident and ambassador Julie Robinson:
"I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for this incredible trip to Belize. From exploring the spice farm and enjoying the family-owned cacao farm, to scuba diving for the first time at Laughing Bird National Park, every experience was truly unforgettable."
